Large Hopi basket large yucca basket galleta grass coil basket with lid.
There are two principal kinds of
baskets: wickers which are made on
Third Mesa and coils which come from
Second Mesa villages. Coils are considered sturdier and harder to make than wickers which have a pleasing texture to their sweeping openness. The wickers are made from scrub sumac and the coils from yucca and galleta grass. There are little signs of damage to this amazing piece, and any wear is simply due to the fact that this basket is well over 80+ years old, if not older.
